GRADO - is an especially attractive town, a summer holiday centre of
the northern Adriatic region, distinctive with beautiful natural environment, excellent climatic
conditions and a more than three-kilometre-long sandy beach. The beach shelves gently into the
sea what is especially favourable to children. The central beach with the best tourist facilities is one
of the most beautiful beaches in Italy and is sought after by tourists from all over the world, who
like to travel here and enjoy a great summer holiday. Mostly the historical centre with its many
romantic alleyways and squares attracts tourists in Grado. The Romans, who had taken shelter
here, as they had to hide from the raiders of north, founded this town. The architecture of the old
townhouses was influenced by the style of Venetia. You can admire the cathedral of St. Euphemius
with pillars made of Greek marble in the 3rd century and the floor from the 6th century. Also
remarkable is the St. Maria basilica from the 5th century. Those of you, who love sun and relax by
the sea, will find ideal places for sunbathing on the beaches of the lagoon, or on any of the small
islands – f.e. Isola di Buso that also offers refreshment in a trattoria (an Italian restaurant). On the
beaches you can do various sports, games and entertainment such as volleyball, water-skiing and
windsurfing. There are also two tennis courts and a basketball ground. Besides the historical
monuments, sights and attractions you can enjoy in the historical centre, there are also many
cafes, restaurants, bars and small shops, which strengthen the holiday atmosphere. Grado is an
ideal place to spend a holiday for travellers of all age groups.
Travel tips / excursions:
• Aquileia - a small town behind the dam that connects Grado with the
mainland of Italy. During the reign of Ceasar Augustus the town was an important
port and since the 3rd century it had been also a religious centre for the whole
region. It lost its importance after the departure of the church nobles to Grado.
You can see Roman excavations here and a pretty early-Christian basilica inside
which you can admire a mosaic floor from the 4th century.
• Cividale - this town lies about 70 km far from Grado and is rich with the
most important artefacts and monuments of the Longo-bard time period.
• Palmanova – a small Italian town, an admirable demonstration of Renaissance architecture.
